Tell us please, in just a few words or maybe lead us to a link that explains the reasons and ramifications of the different grain weights for handguns. For different grains is more powder required? Also for reloading why the different head shaped bullets?

LET IT BE KNOWN, THIS CONVERSATION IS FOR GENERAL ACCEPTED DEFINITIONS. TO BE USED ONLY AS A GUIDELINE FOR BEGINNERS INFORMATION.

Thanks, ammo newbie

Think you opened the can of worms ...

You can get 392fp from a 90gr 9mm, only 326 from a 147gr. You get 399fp out of the 115.

But out to where the 90gr drops off to 206fp the 147 is still carrying 275fp

The 90gr bullets starts out at 1400fps. The 147 only goes 1000fps, you push it any faster and you'll blow the tube...

I'm for the most energy, its the shock that kills... you can poke a hole through a deer and it might just stand there and look at you... you put a crater in one and it will likely be planted.

Is the same amount/strength of powder used for all grains? How to determine "best" configuration for Self protection use and Range use?

So, for those of us that don't have background general knowledge of what you're talking about expand on what you use please. Obviously there are realistic size limits too. What are they.

No... a heaver bullet will.take more pressure to get it moving, you will probably want to go to a slower burning powder to get the most enegry, it will have a lower pressure spike but push longer.

You can still use the faster powder but you have to use less of it to lower the pressure, and energy.

There, I understand that better. Thanks

Considering POST #1 dis-qualifier (general comments) would you and/or other posters mind making some suggestions for self protection ammo. For instance what a buyer reads on the end of the box.

Makes a lot of sense........most of ballistics tests do show that the shock factor is what incapacitates the person not penetration to put a hole thru........I think its called hydrostatic shock to the nervous system.......as you said punching a hole thru may eventually put someone down, but not necessarily before they can do much more damage.........or continue to pose a significant threat !!

So, a longer burning powder to give the bullet a longer push and not a heavy bullet is, in your opinion, the way to go? Looks like a 90 grain then would give more shock value and considering that most self protection is close the distance factor wouldn't be a player?

Yeah I'm for the light and fast,
You can only put so much pressure into the tube, for SD you want all that enegry back now!!! For my hunting loads for my rifle and revolvers I want something that carries its enegry a while...

Have you read Kahrhauler's use of "self cleaning" (my term) bullets? Sounds like a good idea. Any thoughts without stepping on his toes. I'm looking for conversation only not critiques.
