Morning...31 headed to 37...fired up an old 250 GB Maxtor HDD in a IDE to USB enclosure in a powered USB hub & got a loud pop from somewhere as it was spinning up...no smoke, smell coming from the tower or other component issues...thought it might be a capacitor in the Corsair 850w power supply but not seeing any boot or other issues - yet...time will tell...
Update: my big tower is still running normal with no issues including the old HDD in the external enclosure & no additional heat - overclocked CPU still running a cool 82 - 86 deg. F & no detected additional heat from the PSU...dusted out the tower & inspected the motherboard for any signs of damage & found none...the only other thing I can think of is the possibility of some feedback that came through my right speaker that were turned on which is about 10" away from the full tower but there was no other input to the speakers at that time...I spec'd & overbuilt my i7 rig about 12 years ago with the only update needed was to replace my SSD with a much larger SSD boot drive - data is shelled out to a 2 TB mechanical HDD - probably won't build another desktop like others I've done including my wife's 12 year old i5 tower which also can't run Win 11 either - she doesn't want a laptop based system even configured to run a large monitor, full keyboard, wireless mouse, etc. on my network...
The build is complete on my new 17" laptop & should have it early next week...may just build around it to handle future needs...unless I can get my wife to use it in a year or so & I can get another one...
